How to protect your team from burnout with these tips
How to protect your team from burnout with these tipsHow to protect your team from burnout with these tipsBurnout is a growingepidemicin our workplaces, and its affecting leid just employee well-being, but the corporate bottom line. Forty-four percent of full-time workers in the U.S. say they feel burned out at work at least sometimes - if not very often or always - according to a recentGallup report. This contributes to an estimated annual loss of nearly $2,000 per employee from lack of sleep alone, as one study in theJournal of Occupational and Environmental Medicinedetermined. As burnout continues to pervade our workplaces, managers must act to ensure their teams are protected from its harmful effects. Managing a burned out team can be challenging even for the most experienced leaders, but if you find yourself in this position, theres more within your power than you might realize. Heres how you can help look after your colleagues productivity and well-being.Follow Ladders on Flip boardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreManage the whole humanYour direct reports dont work in a vacuum, so when stressors start to affect their performance and morale, its all the more important for you as their manager to understand how they perceive their workload - or as researchers from Harvard Business School call it, their inner work lives. Our research suggests that most managers are not in tune with the inner work lives of their people nor do they appreciate how pervasive the effects of inner work life can be on performance, researchers Teresa Amabile and Steven J. Kramer wrote about their study published inThe Harvard Business Review. Set aside your own expectations of what you think their workloadshouldbe instead, ask them how you can make their physical and emotional experience of the workday better. Consider allowing some more breathing room for certain deliverables to alleviate unnecessary ti me pressure, or let them take a few hours or a day off after a sprint of working long hours (we call this aThrive day) to rest and recharge.Realign your teams expectations - and your own - through compassionate directnessMany stressed out employees feel that too much is expected from them on too short a time frame. Even worse, only 60 percent of workers say they know what is expected of them at work, Gallup found in their 2017State of the American Workplace report. This ambiguity and uncertainty can contribute to alack of control and predictabilityover their jobs, both major risk factors for chronic stress, asDr. Sanjay Guptaexplores in his new HBO documentary, One Nation Under Stress. The best way to approach this as a manager is to check in with your direct reports withcompassionate directness. A warm, open dialogue can help recalibrate expectations on both sides, course-correct any standstills, and encourage solutions to help keep the workload on track while safeguarding your c olleagues well-being.Help your team detach in the evening - and reattach in the morningBecause of smartphones, employees are attached to email 24/7 and may feel obliged to be on call whenever work pings. But mentally detaching from work during non-work hours fosters higher life satisfaction and lower burnout. Encourage your staffers to take the Thrive Microstep ofcalling an end to their workdayand staying offline after that point in the evening. Just as important as detaching from work at the end of the day is reattaching the next morning Arecent studyfrom Portland State University found that employees who take the time to mentally reattach to their work before diving into the days duties are more engaged and energized throughout the day. These positive qualities lead to higher productivity and satisfaction, so build some dedicated focus time into your mornings so your colleagues can prioritize their workload and mentally center themselves for the day ahead. This article originally appeared on Thrive Global. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Federal retirement rates have reboun ded quickly from their recession low of 2.5 percent in 2009 to 3.5 percent in 2012.The jobs to be created will be overwhelmingly in the professional, technical and executive ranks, rather than clerical. The One Thing Successful Professionals Do to Get Ahead
The One Thing Successful Professionals Do to Get AheadThe One Thing Successful Professionals Do to Get AheadWhy you need to make networking a priority even when youre employed.Networking isnt just for job seekers. In fact, the most successful professionals are often superb networkers. With that said, it can be difficult to make networking a priority when youre happily employed and other, more pressing activities are competing for calendar space. If your business cards have begun to gather dust, its time to brush them off and get back into your networking groove.Need more incentive? Here are four reasons professionals at the pinnacle of their careers continuously network (and why you should, too).To sharpen your skillsThe best way to maintain a long, prosperous career is to never stop learning. Many professional associations provide professional development opportunities for their members that focus on the softer skills, such as leadership or public speaking. You can also attend rele vant tradeshows and conferences, which often offer seminars and certification programs to their attendees. Bonus since these groups and events are related to your work, you can make a business case to your employer to fund your membership dues and registration fees. Just be sure to share your newfound knowledge with your colleagues so youre bringing that value back to the entire team.To stay on top of trendsIf you want to get ahead, you need to stay on top of the latest trends in your field. But you dont necessarily need to trek across the country to the big annual conference in order to do this. Consider joining a Meetup group or other local association for your industry. These groups are likely to get together more often, giving you plenty of opportunities to meet new people on a regularly basis and keep a better pulse on your industry. You can also network online by joining and actively participating in LinkedIn groups. To meet a mentorThe right mentor can shape your professional skills, teach you the ins and outs of your industry, help you navigate corporate politics, overcome adversity, and introduce you to the right people and resources to advance your career. The more involved you become in your industry, the more likely you are to find the perfect person to become your mentor or career advocate. Remember, networking isnt restricted to those outside of your company. If you work in a large organization, make it a point to connect with colleagues from other divisions.Prepare for the unknownWhile you may feel secure in your current position, the sad truth is that you never know when you may need to find another job. From company acquisitions to changes in leadership or business structure, there are a number of reasons why you may suddenly find yourself unemployed or desperate to jump ship. The best time to build your network is when youre not immediately looking for favors. Take the time now to build meaningful relationships with those in your professional circle so if or when the time comes, you can call on those connections for referrals, insight into job leads, and other valuable information. As the summer winds down, start touching base with your existing network and mentally preparing for a fall season full of new networking opportunities. Your career will thank you.

Creating SMART Goals to Find an Internship
Creating SMART Goals to Find an InternshipCreating SMART Goals to Find an InternshipCreating goals using the SMART goal system is a technique that is often used by business professionals. It is an acronym that welches believed to have been first used in the November 1981 issue of Management Review by George T. Doran and also was described by Paul J. Meyer in his book Attitude is Everything. To create SMART goals, you must first write down your goals and evaluate them to make sure they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound. You will then follow the SMART goal process as outlined below. Specific By being specific in creating your goals, you will become much more aware of what you want to happen. In buchen to be specific in creating your goals, you must be able to answer the following questions who, what, where, when, which, and why. For example, if you want to get an internship for this summer, you can make your goal(s) specific by answering the following questions Who is involved in your getting an internship? What is it you hope to accomplish?Where do you want an internship? When do you want an internship?Which internship(s) do you want? Why do you want an internship? Measurable Measuring the progress of your goals will make it much more likely that you will achieve them. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach each goal. Establishing concrete criteria for measuring progress on attaining your goal(s) will let you know that you are on target. For example, I will research and apply for five internships this week and network with three alumni from my college by Friday. Attainable By selecting goals that are attainable, you are ensuring that you will do what it takes in order to achieve them. You may departure by writing down short-term, mid-range, and long-term goals. For each goal, you can se t a timeframe on what steps you need to take in order to achieve each goal. In order to attain your goals, you need to be committed to achieving them. This commitment will ensure that you will do everything it takes to accomplish your goals. For example, you want to get an internship in journalism for the summer. You may begin by looking for internship opportunities in the location where you plan to be for the summer. You can do some networking with people currently working in the field, check out online internship listings, and prospect for publications that you may work for by Googling or using your local newspaper or chamber of commerce. Realistic Creating a strategy that will help you to attain your goals will make them more realistic. Deciding to do something challenging will also make it more realistic because you will have to take action in order to make it happen. Setting a goal thats realistic and achievable will give you the motivation to make it happen. If you set a g oal that is too easy to reach, you will probably lose interest and sabotage yourself from achieving your goal. Time-Bound and/or Tangible Creating a timeline for achieving your goal(s) will make it much more likely that you will begin taking the action required to achieve your goal(s) in the allotted timeframe. You also want your goal to be tangible whereby you can actually feel like you can make it happen. A tangible goal is specific, measurable, and attainable and usually, you can feel it like its already happened.
